The 1,000-square-meter area in the station was turned into the newest art space to be an art destination and a new landmark to expand the customer base, targeting both Thai and foreign art lovers. To this end, the companies have also joined forces with leading art partners, famous artists in both modern art and classic art, with events lining up throughout 2023. They expect to increase the MRT service usage by 20%.
Ms. Wattana Sittiwaitayaporn, Assistant Managing Director of Commercial Development and Corporate Communications at Bangkok Expressway and Metro PLC (BEM), revealed that “BEM envisions that society, communities, and families should be able to enjoy creative activities together, thus joining hands with the MRTA, TAT and BMN to transform the MRT Phahon Yothin station to be an art center for world-class artists, as well as to provide opportunities for new artists to showcase their work.
Moreover, it will become an Art Learning Center for students and those who are interested. Each day there will be a workshop, artwork, and music performances by new artists (who are also looking for a space to perform), free of charge. This is the first art exhibition in the subway system in Thailand, and it’s part of BEM’s aim to give back to society as well”
Mr. Witsuwat Amkaphet, Managing Director of Bangkok Metro Networks Co., Ltd. (BMN), said that “The MRT is a mass transit system with more than a million passenger trips per day – a system that drives the economy and society of Bangkok significantly. The company has realized the importance of creative art space, and it’s determined to create new initiatives to excite passengers of the MRT service. It has just launched the “Metro Art” space on an area of more than 1,000 square meters in Phahon Yothin station, having budgeted over 30 million baht.
This project is phenomenal because it merges art with the MRT system to become the new Art Space and Art Destination in the city’s heart, as the MRT Phahon Yothin station connects to all areas of Bangkok. In doing so, the company aims to provide a novel experience and the best impression of being close to art for every MRT user who can view and support the works of Thai artists along the convenient and fast journey of the MRT.”
“The main reason in choosing Phahon Yothin station is that it is right at the city center which connects to other public transport systems and the suburbs, so it has the potential to expand and attract more MRT users. And BMN already had plans to renovate Phahon Yothin station. The company is confident that the official launch of Metro Art on January 25th, together with the relief of COVID-19 and the country’s reopening for tourists, will definitely make the Metro Art at Phahon Yothin station one of the new landmarks of Bangkok among the Thais and foreigners. It is expected to increase the use of MRT service by 20%, or more than 30,000 trips per day, and boost sales for shops in the Metro Mall as well as those in the surrounding areas,” Director Amkaphet added.
For upcoming activities at Metro Art Phahon Yothin station, the highlight is the exhibition of works by famous artists of both modern art and rare classics, which will rotate every month. The first two famous artists commencing the official opening of Metro Art are PRJ and The Jump. Apart from the exhibition, there will be spaces for art activities such as the Art Learning Center, in collaboration with the International Watercolor Society Thailand (IWS), for people to learn arts in various fields.
The IWS Gallery and IWS Shop will also showcase and sell works of art which are worth millions of baht. Moreover, Galleria Benetti has collaborated to create a Paint Here Alright zone that will provide lifestyle products and invite everyone to create in their own way, as well as the Art Market organized by 10ML. There will be live music performances from famous artists throughout 2023. BEM and BMN hope that MRT Phahon Yothin station will be the new Inspiring District of Thailand in the MRT station.
