Bangkok, Thailand<\/strong> \u2013 In a significant move to harness the burgeoning potential of health and wellness tourism, ASEAN member states convened in Bangkok for a pivotal two-day “Regional Policy Consultation on Health and Wellness Tourism in ASEAN,” held from May 27 to 28, 2025. This high-level assembly, drawing nearly 80 representatives from nine ASEAN nations, signals a concerted effort to strengthen the bloc’s position as a leading global destination in this specialized sector, while simultaneously fostering inclusive and sustainable regional growth.<\/p>\n

The initiative received crucial support from the Government of Japan through the esteemed Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF)<\/a> and was meticulously co-organized by Thailand’s Office of SMEs Promotion (OSMEP), the ASEAN Coordinating Committee on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (ACCMSME), and Kenan Foundation Asia.<\/p>\n

A central tenet of this vision is the advancement of inclusive and sustainable regional growth, which is to be achieved through significantly enhanced cooperation among public sector agencies, private industry players, and international development partners.<\/p>\n

Over the intensive two-day period, the diverse gathering of delegates \u2013 including SME policymakers, members of the ACCMSME, representatives from National Tourism Organizations, and prominent leaders from the medical and spa industries \u2013 engaged in comprehensive policy dialogues and shared invaluable experiences. Participants hailed from various critical sectors within the ASEAN countries, including SME agencies responsible for nurturing grassroots economic growth, tourism and health ministries that shape national strategies, influential industry associations that represent the voice of businesses, leading hospitals at the forefront of medical innovation, and pioneering digital health innovators who are reshaping service delivery.<\/p>\n

The critical role of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) within the health and wellness tourism sector was a recurrent theme throughout the consultation. Discussions robustly highlighted the paramount importance of establishing supportive regional frameworks designed to facilitate the greater integration of MSMEs into the tourism value chain. Key to this is the creation of enabling environments that actively promote the formalization of these businesses, thereby enhancing their access to legal protections and support systems.<\/p>\n
