INVITING GEN Z TO JOIN THE “GREEN UNIVERSITY” MISSION, LITTERING YOUR E-WASTE

GREEN UNIVERSITY

Sustainable development matters for every organization and every sector including universities as many educational institutions in Thailand have applied for the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking assessment which was initiated by the University of Indonesia since 2010 for their self-evaluation to be aware of the strengths and issues that need to be improved to meet international standards, leading to creating change towards the goal of sustainability. One of the 6 important evaluation criteria of UI GreenMetric is waste management which also includes electronic waste.

In order to be another driving force to achieve the mission in creating a green university in Thailand, True Corporation has forged ahead in extending electronic waste collection points in the “e-Waste TinkTookTee DTorJai” Project at 9 leading educational institutions under the collaboration of True Lab Project, comprising Chulalongkorn University, Kasetsart University, Thammasat University, Mahidol University, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Srinakharinwirot University, Chiang Mai University, Assumption University and Mahanakorn University of Technology.

Mr. Chakkrit Urairat, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, True Corporation Plc said that “True Lab is a project in which True Corporation has collaborated with 9 universities to provide Thai new generation innovators an opportunity to develop innovations and researches that create value for the Thai economy and society. This time, the company has cooperated with educational institutions under collaboration of True Lab Project to expand littering points of the “e-Waste TinkTookTee DTorJai” Project for staff, teachers and college students, the new generation who are aware of the environment protection, to dispose of e-Waste more conveniently.  The collected e-waste will be recycled in a proper manner and 100% safe, stopping the cycle of toxic substances returning to destroy our health and creating a safe and sustainable food source.”

Professor Supot Teachavorasinskun, Ph.D., Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University said that “Chulalongkorn University is aware of sustainability and has a duty to educate students and related persons on this matter, in parallel with taking actions and practices. E-Waste is very important as it affects the environment and also people’s health. Therefore, proper management of electronic waste will help support sustainability which is in line with the institute’s policy to create a green university. It is believed that this collaboration will fulfill the e-Waste recycling path more completely, from the beginning where electronic waste is collected from consumers all the way to the destination where it will be managed properly.”

Damrong Sripraram, Ph.D., Vice President for Administration, Kasetsart University, said that “Kasetsart University has set a goal to be the university of happiness and sustainability.  We have a strict rule of not allowing to cut down trees.  If it is necessary, a new one has to be planted for replacement.  In addition, we encourage campaigns to reduce energy usage and have a plan to use alternative energy such as solar roofs and another important issue is waste management, which includes e-Waste that must be processed properly as well.

This is considered a common mission that everyone must help together to drive in a concrete way.  If e-waste is managed in a landfill, it will have an impact in the future.  Kasetsart University is pleased to partner with True to encourage students to litter electronic waste properly which will be collected, separated and recycled for use in a correct and safe manner.”

Students and the public can join the “e-Waste TinkTookTee DTorJai” Project by littering e-waste at 154 branches of True Shop, TrueSphere and dtac shop nationwide, NBTC office, Lotus 20 branches throughout Bangkok and vicinity as well as 5 branches of TrueSpace at Siam Square Soi 2, ICONSIAM, Asoke, Mahidol University, Salaya and Rangsit University.
