Huawei Joins Forces with Thai Government and Private Sector to Accelerate Digital Talent Development

Huawei Technologies (Thailand) is taking significant strides in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education,Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), the Ministry of Labor, and other sectors to organize the “Thailand Digital Talent Summit” under the theme “Building a Center of Expertise, Leading Thailand towards an Intelligent and Eco-Friendly Digital Era.”

Mr. David Li, CEO of Huawei Thailand, stated at the event, “Huawei is committed to supporting Thailand’s digital transformation through the Huawei ASEAN Academy (Thailand) program, focusing on developing four key strategies:Business Institute (for executives) to cultivate digital leadership for corporate executives, Technical Institute (for developers) to enhance knowledge, skills, and practical expertise for university students, SMEs, and software developers,Engineering Institute (for professionals) focusing on practical skills for the workforce, and lastly, bridging the digital divide (for users) to provide equal access to digital knowledge for disadvantaged groups.”

“We collaborate with over 10 government agencies, organizations, and educational institutions to offer comprehensive training programs in 5G, cloud, AI, and cybersecurity. Additionally, we have IT competitions and scholarship programs to encourage the younger generation to enter this field.”

Achievements and Collaborations

“To date, Huawei and its partners have developed over 96,000 digital professionals, including 72,000 individuals with digital skills, 8,000 cloud and AI developers, 2,000 green engineers, 5,000 cybersecurity personnel, 3,500 SMEs and startups, and have provided free training to 6,000 students and rural communities. Moreover, Huawei has signed MoUs to establish ICT Academies with 42 leading universities across Thailand.”

Government Support

Ms. Supamas Issaraphakdi, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, emphasized the importance of developing highly skilled digital talent to adapt to the changes in the digital age and collaborating with the private sector to develop essential skills, particularly in cloud and AI, which are crucial in driving the country’s digital economy.

Ms. Jirawan Sutatsunthorn, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Skill Development, added, “The Department of Skill Development is committed to establishing a digital talent development institute to equip the workforce with necessary skills for the digital age, including developing modern and flexible training courses that meet the demands of the labor market. We also focus on upskilling and reskilling the workforce urgently and promoting collaboration with various sectors to enhance workers’ knowledge and capabilities to keep pace with technological changes.”

Academic Collaboration

A professor from the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications highlighted the significance of digital skills development in universities, emphasizing the creation of modern curricula, promoting innovation, and collaborating with the industrial sector to ensure graduates are prepared for the digital workforce. The professor also stressed the importance of developing skills in artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and cloud computing.

New Strategic Partnerships

At the summit, Huawei announced new strategic partnerships with various partners to further enhance the digital talent ecosystem in Thailand:

  • Positive Impact on Government and Policy: In collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science,Research and Innovation (MHESI) and the Ministry of Labor, the three entities aim to train a total of 10,000 ICT personnel, 5,000 cloud and AI developers, and 2,000 green engineers by 2025. They have partnered with over 20 leading universities to build knowledge through Huawei’s cloud and digital developer courses.
  • Sharing Academic Knowledge: Leading universities, including Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Khon Kaen University, and Mahidol University, launched new projects with Huawei,collaborating to drive experience transfer, knowledge sharing, and workforce development for the future.
  • Scholarships for Students: To encourage youth to enter the ICT industry, Huawei organized an ICT competition for scholarships in 2023-2024, awarding nine prizes to winning teams in three categories: Network, Cloud, and Computing, with a total prize value of over 1.4 million baht.
  • Industry Engagement and Job Creation: Huawei, along with 15 partners in enterprise business, cloud, green energy, and human resources, organized a job fair to provide opportunities for students trained and certified by Huawei to access jobs in various fields, including system installation, enterprise business, and software development.

Previous Initiatives

Previously, Huawei collaborated with policy-making agencies and project partners to develop 100,000 digital professionals by 2025. Huawei Thailand partnered with the National Cybersecurity Agency (NCSA) to organize a cybersecurity competition with 4,000 participants and collaborated with the National Innovation Agency (NIA) to train 160 Thai SMEs on 5G technology, smart cities, AI, and immersive robotics. Huawei has also organized ICT competitions covering cloud technology, intellectual property, and cybersecurity since 2015, awarding scholarships worth 1 million baht in 2023, and the Digital Bus project, providing digital skills training to students in remote areas across 14 provinces in Thailand.
