Huawei: 5.5G a Turning Point for Asia-Pacific’s Golden Age of Digital Economy

TheReporterAsia: Bangkok – Huawei has expressed confidence that 5.5G, or 5G Advanced, will be more than just connectivity and will unlock limitless potential for all industries. Mr. Abel Deng, President of Carrier Network Sales, Asia Pacific Region, Huawei, spoke at the Asia-Pacific ICT Summit 2024 – Thailand, emphasizing that 5.5G will offer 10 times the performance improvements over 5G in terms of low latency, resource allocation accuracy, and energy efficiency.

Mr. Abel stated that 5.5G will provide download speeds of over 10 gigabits per second, upload speeds of over 1 gigabit per second, and reduce latency from 14 milliseconds to just 1 millisecond, or even lower. Additionally, 5.5G will offer native artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.

“Globally, we expect more than 60 service providers to offer 5.5G with business packages,” said Mr. Abel, citing China Mobile in Shanghai, which has already launched a 5.5G or 5G Advanced package.

Generative AI: A Key Catalyst

Huawei believes that Generative AI, combined with the young population and growing economy of the Asia-Pacific region, will bring about significant changes, especially in the AI-enabled smartphone market.

“IDC predicts that more than 170 million AI smartphones will be shipped worldwide, and the Asia-Pacific region will account for nearly 40-50% of that number.”

He believes that the proliferation of AI-generated content will lead to a massive amount of data traffic on the network, which will open up new opportunities for industrial development and lifestyle changes in the future.

5G Driving the Digital Economy

Mr. Abel reiterated the important role of 5G in the development of the digital economy, citing research that indicates that a 10% increase in 5G usage in the Asia-Pacific region will result in a 1-1.8% increase in each country’s GDP.

“5G can also increase productivity in traditional industries by nearly 20%,” Mr. Abel added.

Success of 5G in Asia-Pacific

Mr. Abel praised the progress of 5G in the Asia-Pacific region, especially in Thailand, where 5G is widely used in the industrial sector, such as smart factories, 5G-connected mines, and smart hospitals.

“In China, the 5G to B business has become the main engine of growth for the three major network operators,” said Mr.Abel.

Building a Golden Decade Together

Mr. Abel concluded by calling on all sectors to work together to create a “golden decade” of the digital economy.

“The development of the digital economy and industry requires the cooperation of all parties, from the government to the industrial sector, from companies to families and individuals,” said Mr. Abel.

He believes that with the power of 5.5G technology and close cooperation, we can step into the world of intelligence and create a fully connected and intelligent Asia-Pacific region.

“We will create a new decade, a golden decade for the development of our digital economy together,” Mr. Abel concluded.

Thailand, a leader in digital transformation in the region, has seen rapid growth in the adoption of 5G technology to drive significant digital development in industry and strengthen the digital economy. With the evolution and arrival of 5.5G,Thailand is entering a critical period of transformation.

The international standard for 5.5G, finalized in early 2024, is a major step forward in telecommunications. This technology has improved and enhanced the use of 5G technology as follows:

  • Ultra-Broadband: 5.5G offers download speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s, which is ten times faster than 5G, and upload speeds of at least 500 Mbit/s for the ultimate seamless and fast experience.
  • Deterministic SLA: With lower latency of 1 millisecond, 5.5G guarantees service quality, which is essential for real-time applications and services.
  • AI and Autonomous Networks: The integration of AI into more intelligent operations and maintenance (O&M) increases network efficiency and precise marketing tools, enabling operators to manage large networks efficiently.
