The total number of transfer and payment transactions reached over 2.109 billion, a 22% increase from the previous year. As of the end of August 2023, the total number of registered PromptPay users reached 73.16 million, comprising 72.81 million individuals and 0.35 million businesses, underscoring its popularity across all sectors.
August 1, 2023, set a new record with the highest number of transactions at 81.17 million, followed by August 30 and 31,which are typically periods of high spending activity.
Foreign Tourists Enjoy Convenient QR Code Payments
The PromptPay Cross-Border QR Payment service allows foreign tourists to make payments through their mobile banking apps easily, securely, and without fees. This has led to a surge in spending via Thai QR Codes in August 2023,reaching 238 million baht, a remarkable 408% growth compared to the same period last year.
Malaysia, Indonesia, and Laos are the top three countries with the highest spending through Cross-Border QR Payment,highlighting the service’s potential to attract tourists and stimulate the economy.
PromptPay Cross-Border: Connecting Thai Finance with the World
PromptPay Cross-Border QR Payment is not limited to tourist spending in Thailand. Currently, Thais can use QR codes for payments in seven countries: Japan, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
Simultaneously, tourists from five countries – Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Laos – can also make payments via QR codes in Thailand. In August 2023, the total spending through this service exceeded 238 million baht.
However, there are some limitations to using PromptPay across borders, including supported banks, transaction limits,and currencies, which vary by country. Users should check with their banks for more details before using the service.
