Bangkok, Thailand – The Thai government has expressed its commitment to accelerating the nation’s transition to a low-carbon society. This declaration follows a series of comprehensive proposals put forth by various sectors, including the government, private businesses, and civil society, at the ESG Symposium 2024 held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.

The symposium, attended by over 3,500 participants, underscored the urgency of shifting towards clean energy and embracing a circular economy. A key highlight was the ‘Saraburi Sandbox’ initiative,envisioned as a pilot project to demonstrate the feasibility of a low-carbon society in Thailand.
Deputy Prime Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong, who also serves as the Minister of Digital Economy and Society,attended the symposium and actively engaged with the proposals presented. He emphasized the government’s dedication to implementing policies that support this crucial transition.
Key Proposals for a Low-Carbon Thailand
Thammasak Sethaudom, President & CEO of SCG, outlined four key proposals that emerged from collaborative discussions:

Unlocking Legal & Regulatory Barriers: This entails liberalizing clean energy trading, mandating energy storage systems for large-scale clean energy projects, introducing a comprehensive law on the circular economy, and promoting green procurement practices in the public sector.

Promoting Access to Green Finance: The focus here is on supporting businesses in obtaining international carbon certification and establishing local agencies for carbon credit certification.

Upgrading Technology & Green Infrastructure: This involves promoting the use and development of energy storage systems, optimizing the use of existing and green infrastructure, and enhancing green logistics and waste management systems.

Strengthening SMEs’ Adaptability and Capability: The aim is to equip the workforce with knowledge about clean energy, encourage the adoption of innovative technologies, and foster collaboration between different sectors to enhance the competitiveness of SMEs.

Saraburi Sandbox: A Model for Low-Carbon Living
The ‘Saraburi Sandbox’ initiative was also highlighted as a crucial testing ground for addressing challenges and implementing solutions for a low-carbon society. This project emphasizes the importance of collaboration between the public, private, and civil sectors.
