True with Partners Launch SMS Disaster Alerts for High-Risk Areas

Bangkok, Thailand – True Corporation Public Company Limited today announced a significant collaboration with the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) and the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) to introduce an SMS-based disaster alert system. This service will deliver critical alerts directly to the mobile phones of True and dtac customers residing in areas prone to natural disasters, with a focus on providing location-specific information down to the sub-district and village levels.

Mr. Chakkrit Urairat, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at True Corporation Plc., emphasized the company’s commitment to public safety, stating, “True is deeply concerned about the well-being of the people. That’s why we’ve partnered with the DDPM and NBTC to develop this emergency SMS alert system. We’ve initiated a pilot program for Level 3 warnings, beginning with notifications about the overflow of the Wang River in three sub-districts of Koh Kha District, Lampang Province. This system is designed to ensure that people in high-risk areas receive timely information, enabling them to prepare for and respond effectively to potential emergencies.”

Alerts will be sent with ‘DDPM’ as the sender, clearly identifying them as originating from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. Each alert will contain comprehensive details, including the date, time, location, severity level of the disaster, and specific safety instructions to guide residents.

The SMS system offers a distinct advantage in its accessibility – people can receive critical information instantly without the need to download any additional applications, ensuring that alerts reach the widest possible audience.

The DDPM plays a crucial role in this initiative, acting as the primary agency responsible for monitoring, collecting, and analyzing data from relevant organizations. Once potential threats are identified, the DDPM will instruct True Corporation to disseminate alerts to individuals in at-risk areas. The system employs two types of notifications: advance warnings issued 12-24 hours ahead of an anticipated event and emergency alerts issued 6-12 hours before an event.

This SMS alert service is poised to empower residents with the essential information they need to prepare for and respond effectively to disasters, thereby mitigating risks and potential losses.
