Lufthansa Group Celebrates 65 Years of Connecting Thailand with Europe

Bangkok, Thailand – Lufthansa Group, the largest European airline group in Thailand, recently celebrated its 65th anniversary of continuous service between Thailand and Europe. The event, held at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Bangkok, highlighted Lufthansa’s commitment to the Thai market and its position as the fourth-largest airline group worldwide, with a network spanning over 200 destinations across Europe.

During the event, Lufthansa Group announced its plans for network expansion and emphasized its four core strategies:

  1. Elevating Customer Experience: Prioritizing seamless and premium travel experiences for passengers.
  2. New Product Development: Continuously innovating and introducing new products and services to enhance travel.
  3. Multi-Airline Multi-Hub Connectivity: Strengthening its position as a leading aviation hub connecting Thailand with multiple destinations in Europe through various airlines within the group.
  4. Transitioning to an Integrated Airline Group: Consolidating its services and operations to offer a unified and comprehensive travel experience.

These strategies underscore Lufthansa’s dedication to providing premium services, elevating travel experiences, and achieving sustainable growth in Thailand and the broader region. The focus remains on developing Thailand as a key aviation hub, connecting to various destinations within the ASEAN region.

A380 Returns, Austrian Airlines Expands

A key highlight of the celebration was the return of the Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft, to the Bangkok-Munich route this winter. Lufthansa stands as the sole airline offering direct A380 service to Europe from Bangkok. The aircraft provides a four-class configuration, featuring First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy, ensuring a comfortable and luxurious journey for all passengers. Furthermore, Austrian Airlines, a member of the Lufthansa Group, announced an increase in flight frequency to Vienna, further expanding travel options between Thailand and Europe. Lufthansa also continues to offer First Class service from Bangkok, connecting passengers to over 200 destinations via its Munich hub, the first 5-star airport in Europe, with convenient 30-minute connections.

Bangkok: A Vital Destination for Lufthansa Group

Felipe Bonifatti, Lufthansa Group Vice President for Asia Pacific & Joint Ventures East, who recently assumed his new role, emphasized the importance of Bangkok as a destination for Lufthansa Group. “Bangkok has been – and remains – a vital destination for us,” said Bonifatti. “For the past 65 years, we have been proud to connect people, cultures, and economies between Thailand and Europe. We are committed to developing Thailand as a key aviation hub in Southeast Asia.”

From Humble Beginnings to Sustainable Growth

Lufthansa Group’s journey in Thailand began in 1959 with its inaugural flight from Hamburg to Bangkok, a two-day voyage with six stopovers, highlighting the challenges of intercontinental travel at the time. However, driven by its vision to connect people, cultures, and economies between Thailand and Europe, Lufthansa Group has continuously expanded its network and services.

From its initial flight, Lufthansa Group has grown significantly, becoming the largest European airline group in Thailand. It now offers up to 31 weekly flights from Thailand to Europe through its four-airline network, including Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, and Eurowings. The group employs over 500 people across three business units in Thailand and more than 96,000 worldwide.

Throughout its 65-year history, Lufthansa Group has not only focused on network expansion but also on enhancing service quality and introducing innovations to elevate the passenger experience. The return of the Airbus A380 on the Bangkok-Munich route exemplifies its commitment to providing unparalleled comfort and luxury, while the increased flight frequency by Austrian Airlines to Vienna caters to the growing travel demand.

Sustainability and Future Growth

Lufthansa Group remains committed to innovation and sustainability. The airline focuses on developing technologies to minimize its environmental impact while enhancing the passenger experience. Lufthansa Group passengers contributed to offsetting 47.8 tons of carbon dioxide emissions between January and September 2024. Currently, Lufthansa Group is investing over 2.5 billion euros in fleet renewal, the largest investment in the company’s history, focusing on fuel-efficient aircraft with lower carbon dioxide emissions.

Lufthansa Group’s journey in Thailand is a testament to its commitment to sustainable growth, guided by its core values of providing exceptional travel experiences, continuous improvement, and responsible business practices. The airline remains dedicated to connecting people, cultures, and economies between Thailand and Europe.
