Thailand Post Drives Thai-Vietnamese E-Commerce and Trade

Hanoi, Vietnam – Thailand Post Company Limited is propelling the Thai-Vietnamese e-commerce and international trade economy forward, focusing on three main transport routes: air, ground, and rail. This initiative aims to foster seamless economic growth between the two nations.

In collaboration with Vietnam Post, under the ASEAN Postal Framework (ASEANPOST), the project seeks to enhance e-commerce by providing comprehensive solutions for distributing Thai and Vietnamese goods through integrated platforms.

Dr. Dhanant Subhadrabandhu, CEO of Thailand Post, emphasized Vietnam’s promising economic outlook, particularly in emerging sectors like automotive, electronics, consumer goods, and especially retail and e-commerce.

Vietnamese consumers spend approximately 1 billion US dollars monthly on online channels, with foreign platforms actively investing in the market. This places Vietnam among the top 10 fastest-growing e-commerce markets globally.

Thailand Post recognizes this as an opportunity to expand its business, support Thai entrepreneurs in international trade, and solidify its goal of becoming a Trusted Sustainable ASEAN Brand. By utilizing both physical and digital networks, Thailand Post is fortifying Thai-Vietnamese economic ties.

3 Main Transport Routes

  • Air Transport: Thailand Post provides air shipping between Thailand and Vietnam to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City via Thai Airways. This offers the fastest, most reliable, and secure option, along with convenient document handling.
  • Ground Transport: Thailand Post previously exchanged ground parcels with Vietnam through the Aranyaprathet-Phnom Penh-Ho Chi Minh route. This was suspended in 2020 due to COVID-19 and the Thai-Cambodian border closure. In 2024, Thailand Post resumed cross-border parcel exchanges with Cambodia and plans to extend this route through Cambodia to Vietnam.
  • Rail Transport: Thailand Post is studying the feasibility of rail transport with Lao Post, Vietnam Post, and related authorities, focusing on the Thailand-Laos-Vietnam route. Key routes include R12, linking Nakhon Phanom to the Vũng Áng economic zone in Vietnam, enabling further transit to China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region via Vietnamese roads. Another route under consideration is the Thakhek (Laos) – Vũng Áng (Vietnam) route, part of the Laos-Vietnam railway project, with construction anticipated to start by late 2024 and operations commencing by 2028.

Regional Cooperation

To boost ASEAN economic integration, Thailand Post, Vietnam Post (Bưu điện Việt Nam), and Indonesia Post (Pos Indonesia), along with strategic advisors Paytech (a Vietnamese company) and Kota (a Singaporean company), have signed an agreement to establish the Regional ASEAN Post Alliance (RAPA).

This alliance will concentrate on four key areas:

  1. Cross-border e-commerce partnerships linking online and offline systems
  2. A unified logistics model
  3. QR code development for easy transactions
  4. Expansion of ASEAN e-commerce as a central hub for global markets

Thailand Post also intends to promote Thai and Vietnamese products worldwide through RAPA shop, an e-commerce platform project showcasing popular products with full-service postal delivery. This is projected to generate revenue for both countries’ postal services.

Potential Thai exports to Vietnam include coffee, tourism products, processed foods, beverages, electronics, automotive parts, health and beauty products, and pet supplies.

The RAPA partnership will also involve developing new logistics and supply chain collaborations, such as warehouse integration, advanced transport technology for faster shipping, and knowledge exchange among the three countries, focusing on profitability, human resource management, and sustainability.
