CEA Taps Content Industry as Engine for Thailand’s Global Ambition

The Creative Economy Agency (CEA) has unveiled a strategic blueprint to establish Thailand as a global creative hub, positioning the nation’s burgeoning content industry as the flagship engine for economic growth and international influence. This ambitious vision was crystallized at the 2025 Creative Excellence Awards, where 15 winners were crowned, showcasing a potent mix of technological innovation, social impact, and sustainable design that signals Thailand’s readiness to compete on the world stage.

In an era defined by rapid technological shifts and economic volatility, nations worldwide are pivoting to creativity as a key competitive advantage. For Thailand, this pivot is being decisively led by the Creative Economy Agency (CEA), a public organization tasked with nurturing a robust ecosystem for innovation and culture-based commerce. The agency’s strategy is clear: leverage Thailand’s inherent creative strengths to build a resilient, high-value economy.

The culmination of this strategy was on full display on September 24, 2025, at the EMSKYE gallery in Bangkok’s EmSphere complex. Here, the CEA hosted the third annual Creative Excellence Awards, an event that has rapidly evolved from a simple ceremony into a strategic platform for identifying and amplifying Thailand’s most promising creative ventures. This year’s 15 awards were distributed across three core categories: Creative City, Creative Business, and Creative Social Impact, reflecting a holistic approach to national development.

Dr. Chakrit Pichyangkul, Executive Director of the Creative Economy Agency, articulated the vision behind the awards. “The Creative Excellence Awards are more than just a ceremony; they are a vital mechanism for demonstrating the power of creativity to Thai society,” he stated. “This is our stage to honor the entrepreneurs, creators, organizations, and communities who are harnessing creativity to drive the economy and generate positive impact, from the local level to the global arena.”

The event’s growing prestige is evidenced by a dramatic surge in participation, with over 500 submissions from across the country—a significant leap from the 200-300 entries in its initial years. This intense competition, with a win rate of just 15 out of 500, underscores the exceptional quality of the finalists and winners. “The heart of these awards lies in the belief in the ‘Power of Creative Excellence’,” Dr. Chakrit added. “All 15 winners exemplify three core pillars: genuine Creativity, tangible Value Creation, and measurable Impact on society and the economy. They are strengthening the competitive capacity of Thai creators to stand firm and thrive on the world stage.”

From 500 Contenders to 15 Champions of Innovation

The 2025 winners provide a compelling snapshot of a nation brimming with ingenuity. They represent not just artistic merit, but commercially viable and socially transformative ideas that are ready for scaling. Among the standouts are projects that are redefining technology, social inclusivity, and sustainability.

UNFEST: Engineering the Future of Digital Entertainment Winning the Creative Festival Award, UNFEST by Unformat Studio Co., Ltd. is far more than an entertainment event. It is a strategically designed ecosystem for Thailand’s digital creators, focused on the revolutionary potential of Real-Time Technology. By integrating film, music, art, and tech, UNFEST serves as a crucial learning and innovation hub for disciplines like Virtual Production, which utilizes massive LED screens for immersive filmmaking, and AI-driven visual arts.

“We identified a highly skilled production community in Thailand that lacked a central platform to connect and collaborate,” a representative from the UNFEST team explained. “As the world pivots to real-time tech, we created this festival as an annual nexus for creators to showcase their capabilities, exchange knowledge, and forge partnerships.” The award, they note, validates their mission to foster new career paths—such as Virtual Production Specialists and AI Artists—thereby strengthening Thailand’s soft power and positioning the nation as a premier production hub in the region.

‘Big Eye Girl…’: A Theatrical Revolution Forging the ‘Equality Economy’ In a historic first, the New Heritage Theatre Company and Friends clinched the Creative Equality Award for their groundbreaking play, “Big Eye Girl, Who Just Died Yesterday.” The production has shattered barriers by becoming the world’s first theatrical performance designed for deaf, blind, and general audiences to experience simultaneously, within the same show, without assistive technology. This innovation unlocks a new market segment termed the ‘Equality Economy’.

The director pioneered a new “communicative grammar,” masterfully blending Thai sign language, traditional dance, low-frequency soundscapes, and radio-play techniques. “As an artist, I realized I was only creating for a fraction of the population. With just a little more thought—how to write a script for the blind, how to stage it for the deaf—we created a shared experience. That is its true power; it leaves no one behind,” he remarked. The play has already received international acclaim and touring invitations, a prime example of soft power through cultural innovation. The primary remaining hurdle, the director notes, is improving accessible transportation infrastructure to fully unlock this market’s potential.

KMUTT’s Biocement: From Industrial Waste to Sustainable Superfood Addressing sustainability with profound economic impact, the project “Biocement for Saline Soil Restoration and Sustainable Enhancement of Thai Rice Value” from King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) won the Creative Sustainability Award. This innovation transforms waste from the seafood industry, such as fish sauce residue and seashells, into a living “biocement.”

When applied to saline rice paddies in Nakhon Ratchasima, the results were staggering. Rice yields skyrocketed from 300 to 800 thang per rai while dramatically reducing the need for chemical fertilizers. Furthermore, it elevates Thai rice to “superfood” status by increasing its GABA content by 300% and lowering its glycemic index (GI) by 30%—perfectly targeting the lucrative global health food market. The project also integrates a new economic model, allowing farmers to sell carbon credits from their fields, creating a new revenue stream and embodying a perfect execution of the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) economic model.

The Strategic Pivot: Why Content is Crowned King

While celebrating successes across all 15 creative industries, Dr. Chakrit acknowledged that making a global impact requires strategic focus. This has led CEA to designate a flagship sector to spearhead Thailand’s international push: the content industry.

“I am quite confident that Thailand is poised to become the next Global Creative Content Powerhouse,” Dr. Chakrit stated with conviction. “Economically, our entertainment and media industry is valued at approximately 700 billion baht (approx. $19 billion USD), with the content sector alone contributing nearly 100 billion baht annually. The proof is already here: major international productions like HBO’s The White Lotus are filming in Thailand, and Thai films are winning major awards at the Cannes Film Festival. We are ready.”

The choice of content as the flagship is a deeply strategic one. “Content is the ultimate vehicle,” Dr. Chakrit explained. “When our films and series travel abroad, they don’t just carry a story. They carry our culture, food, fashion, tourist destinations, and a positive national image. We’ve seen the power of this with Korean dramas, which created a global desire to visit Korea and eat Korean food. Content is the flagship industry that will pull all other creative sectors forward with it.”

Building the Ecosystem: From Funding to Filming Incentives

CEA is acutely aware that talent alone is not enough. One of the most significant hurdles for the Thai content industry has been “access to funding.” To bridge this gap, CEA has launched the Bangkok International Content Market. “We created this platform to connect our creators—with their brilliant, unproduced ideas and projects—directly with global investors, buyers, and platforms like Netflix, ViuTV, and international studios,” Dr. Chakrit noted. “This matchmaking will fuel the creation of more high-quality content within our ecosystem.”

Thailand’s readiness as a production hub is further fortified by three powerful pillars:

  1. A Competitive Cash Rebate: Offering up to 30% back on production spending, a powerful financial incentive on par with global standards.
  2. World-Class Technical Expertise: Thai production crews are internationally recognized for their skill, professionalism, and ingenuity.
  3. Unmatched Location Diversity: From pristine beaches and lush mountains to sprawling metropolises, Thailand offers a vast array of backdrops accessible year-round.

This combination of talent, infrastructure, and government support creates an irresistible magnetic pull for global productions.

The CEA Awards event itself reflected this global ambition, featuring a video address from Ms. Sylvie Forbin of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, a significant international endorsement. The program also included expert panels on crucial future-focused topics like Generative AI and intellectual property rights, ensuring Thai creators are prepared for the next wave of industry transformation.

Looking ahead, CEA has a clear pathway for its award winners, providing them with opportunities for exhibition at Thailand’s four largest design festivals—Bangkok Design Week, Chiang Mai Design Week, Isan Creative Festival, and Puktai Design Week—which collectively attract millions of visitors. From there, the agency will support their entry into prestigious international competitions, turning local success into global recognition.

“The Creative Excellence Awards prove that world-class creativity is happening right here, driven by Thais from all walks of life,” Dr. Chakrit concluded. “We hope these awards inspire our society to believe in the power of creative thought and to join us in propelling the Thai economy towards sustainable, innovation-driven growth.”
