In a groundbreaking move for Thailand’s sustainable packaging sector, four industry leaders have commercialized a 100% recyclable mono-material refill pouch, scaling up circular economy solutions for mass-market consumer products.
Redefining Flexible Packaging for a Circular Economy
The landscape of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) packaging in Thailand has reached a significant sustainability milestone. Dow Thailand Group, Kao Industrial (Thailand) Co., Ltd., SCG Chemicals (SCGC), and SCG Packaging (SCGP) have united to transform traditional multi-layer flexible packaging into a high-performance, single-material alternative. Designed for complete recyclability, this breakthrough addresses a long-standing environmental challenge: the complex, multi-material structures typically used in refill pouches that defy conventional recycling methods.
By pivoting to a mono-material structure, the newly developed pouch seamlessly integrates into existing polyethylene mechanical recycling streams across Thailand. This structural overhaul optimizes post-use waste management, bridging the gap between mass consumer convenience and environmental responsibility. The technology has successfully moved beyond the laboratory phase and has been fully commercialized, hitting retail shelves nationwide since June 2026.
“Kao continues to develop environmentally friendly packaging in line with our ESG strategies or Kirei Lifestyle Plan and the 4Rs principles — Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Replace. Magiclean floor cleaner is one of our successful products in the market, and we aim to build on that success by making it easier for environmentally conscious consumers to participate — without changing their daily behavior. Simply choosing Kao products can contribute to greater environmental care. This development is therefore not only about packaging improvement but also about creating a positive impact for consumers and the environment.” — Akira Nishimaki, President of Kao Industrial (Thailand) Co., Ltd.
The initiative directly accelerates Thailand’s overarching transition toward a circular economy and carbon neutrality. Moving away from multi-layer mixed plastics drastically reduces the volume of hard-to-recycle waste entering landfills. On a macro level, this cooperative effort models how horizontal supply chain integration can effectively resolve complex industrial sustainability bottlenecks.
Synergizing Material Science and Manufacturing Expertise
The realization of this packaging breakthrough relies heavily on a specialized division of technical labor among the four corporate partners. Kao Thailand brought its extensive consumer footprint and stringent brand standards to the table, ensuring the product met strict market criteria. SCGP spearheaded the complex task of packaging structure design and film development, managing film formulation and conducting extensive real-use testing. Meanwhile, material science heavyweights SCGC and Dow provided the high-performance polymer innovations necessary to maintain packaging integrity.
“Our team worked extensively to ensure that the new packaging maintains strength, durability, and compatibility with customers’ existing forming processes. This collaboration demonstrates a strong commitment among partners to elevate packaging performance and sustainability simultaneously, and it can be extended to other consumer product categories to scale packaging designed for recyclability and support the circular economy.” — Ekaraj Niroj, Chief Customer Officer of SCGP
To ensure the pouch could withstand rigorous logistical demands, the printing and structural layers required premium resins. SCGC introduced its proprietary SCGC™ HDPE H619F resin for the exterior printing layer, which delivers excellent shape retention, structural strength, and high-fidelity printability to keep branding vibrant. For the critical sealant layer, Dow deployed its INNATE™ TF80 and AFFINITY™ high-performance polyethylene resins. These materials collectively guarantee exceptional pouch strength, long-term product protection, and seamless compatibility with Kao’s existing high-speed filling machinery.
“INNATE™ TF80 and AFFINITY™ high-performance polyethylene resins from Dow, used in the sealant layer, help enhance packaging strength, durability, and product protection throughout its shelf life, while enabling a design that considers end-of-life management. This achievement demonstrates the role of materials science in supporting our customers to meet their sustainability goals and accelerating Thailand’s transition toward a circular economy.” — Vichan Tangkengsirisin, Dow Thailand President
Ultimately, this joint technical triumph proves that mono-material packaging can match the mechanical performance of traditional multi-material plastics. The collaborative framework builds upon previously established Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) aimed at developing sustainable packaging materials. By proving that eco-friendly pouches do not require a compromise on durability or shelf life, the partners have set a new technical benchmark for the regional packaging industry.
Strategic Market Impact and Corporate Sustainability Visions
The commercial launch of the Magiclean Natural Essence mono-material pouch is expected to divert approximately 18 tons of plastic waste per year into productive recycling streams, calculated based on standard annual refill pouch usage data. For Kao Thailand, this rollout marks a crucial step toward its ambitious environmental social governance (ESG) roadmap, known as the Kirei Lifestyle Plan. The consumer goods giant aims to design 100% of its product packaging for recyclability by the year 2027, with a final goal of achieving net-zero plastic packaging waste by 2040.
“For this project, the key challenge was to use a single material across all packaging layers. In the printing layer, SCGC developed SCGC™ HDPE H619F, a high-density polyethylene resin that provides strength, shape retention, and excellent printability with vibrant and durable colors. This enables the packaging to be 100% recyclable, supporting the return of used plastics into the system and aligning with sustainability strategies.” — Sakchai Patiparnpreechavud, Chief Executive Officer and President of SCGC
For SCGP and SCGC, the project serves as a scalable proof-of-concept that can be replicated across a myriad of other liquid consumer product categories. By proving that flexible mono-material packaging can function effectively at scale, the chemical and packaging giants are well-positioned to meet the rising corporate demand for green packaging alternatives. The shift aligns with tightening global and local regulatory pressures regarding plastic waste and extended producer responsibility.
Beyond the immediate corporate and industrial advantages, the project actively empowers daily consumers to engage in environmental stewardship. Because the sustainable packaging swap occurs seamlessly at the retail level, consumers contribute to waste reduction without needing to alter their purchasing habits or daily routines. The four organizations hope that this launch will foster broader public participation in proper waste segregation and cleaner recycling habits across Thailand.
