G2A.COM, a global digital entertainment marketplace, has partnered with gaming intelligence firm Newzoo to publish its latest consumer research revealing that 73% of premium gamers delay purchasing new releases due to high launch prices, waiting an average of five months for suitable discounts. Concurrently, executive leadership confirmed plans to expand across Southeast Asia, identifying Thailand as a high-priority growth market while introducing dedicated developer support and verified seller compliance.
Shifting Buyer Dynamics and the Five-Month Window
The joint study, titled “Game purchasing behavior in an era of choice,” surveyed 6,166 active PC and console gamers aged 18 to 55 across the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia. Findings show that gamers increasingly evaluate release timing, channel convenience, and value before buying, spending an annual average of $368 across base games, subscriptions, and downloadable content (DLC).
Price points directly govern sales velocity, with respondents considering a 29% discount a reasonable entry price, while a 45% markdown represents a high-value purchase. Discounts reaching 70%, however, trigger consumer hesitation regarding game quality. The report found that 58% of transactions take place beyond the launch month, and 36% occur after six months, underscoring that commercial lifecycles extend well past day-one releases.
Alexis Pamboris, Research Director at Newzoo, noted that revenue generation does not end at debut, emphasizing that with roughly 60% of sales occurring post-launch, publishers require sustained monetization strategies involving subscriptions and discounts to maintain long-term engagement.
Enterprise Marketplace Integrity and Channel Roles
Addressing historical industry perceptions surrounding secondary marketplaces, Katarzyna Jakubiec, Chief Business Officer at G2A.COM, clarified during an interview in Bangkok that the platform has phased out individual sellers. Marketplace participation is now restricted exclusively to verified corporate entities undergoing rigorous Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) protocols, alongside compliance with global regulations such as PSD2 and PSD3.
Jakubiec stated that millions of euros are invested annually in cybersecurity, transaction monitoring, and fraud prevention. All third-party corporate merchants are required to provide verifiable acquisition documentation and purchase invoices upon request to ensure traceability. Gaming software continues to represent 50% to 60% of G2A.COM’s total sales volume, followed by digital gift cards, subscriptions, and utilities. Rather than engaging in aggressive price-cutting of 80% to 90%, the marketplace maintains standard commercial markdowns around 30% to 33%, supported by the G2A Plus loyalty reward ecosystem.
Jakubiec emphasized that gaming habits are evolving from immediate day-one purchases toward value assessments, where players monitor initial patch updates and reviews before committing. A flexible, multi-channel marketplace infrastructure provides players with broader digital catalog choices without undermining product value.
Southeast Asian Consumption Patterns and Mobile Focus
Bartłomiej Woźniak, Head of Category Management at G2A.COM, highlighted regional divergences during media briefings, pointing out that Western markets remain heavily centered on PC and console ecosystems, whereas Southeast Asia and Thailand are driven primarily by mobile gaming.
This regional profile generates heavy consumer demand for mobile game top-ups, in-game currencies, and digital gift cards rather than standalone boxed titles. Woźniak added that while major AAA publishers increasingly integrate artificial intelligence into production pipelines, the technology has not yet lowered production overheads, keeping game prices elevated. Consequently, budget-conscious consumers are pivoting toward high-quality AA releases or catalog classics, while older web-browser gaming formats continue to see diminished engagement.
Thai Expansion Roadmap and Local Developer Support
Attending gamescom asia x Thailand Game Show 2026, G2A.COM executives held preliminary talks with local payment processors, marketing agencies, and merchants to build local operational infrastructure. The company is actively integrating localized mobile payment channels across Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam to facilitate frictionless transactions for younger demographics without credit cards, while testing automated AI translation models for prospective local-language storefronts.
To support local content creators, G2A.COM is opening merchant onboarding for Thai game studios, providing access to more than 35 million global buyers across 180 countries. Participating Thai developers receive dedicated accounts, premier homepage placement, and Google Performance marketing support, accompanied by a 10% platform commission fee—significantly lower than the standard 30% cut levied by platforms such as Steam.
